Common Questions About Invisalign

Invisalign is designed to correct your teeth using clear removable aligners trays. It is the perfect way to straighten your smile without the hassle of metal wires and brackets like traditional braces. Invisalign is effective for adult and children who want an unnoticeable treatment option to correct mild or moderate crooked or crowded teeth, and adjust bad bites or close spacing. At Dr. Doré Orthodontics, we want to ensure an easy, efficient experience for all of our patients. Below is a list of the most commonly asked questions about Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners to straighten your teeth. Aligners are typically worn about one to two weeks per set. As you replace each aligner with the next, your teeth will begin to move gradually - week-by-week, until the final alignment prescribed is attained.

How Long Does The Treatment Last?

Each patient is different and their specific needs are different. Most patients wear Invisalign aligners for 6 to 24 months but treatment time depends upon the complexity of your case.

What Are The Benefits Of Invisalign Compared To Traditional Braces?

  • Dr Dore Invisalign Photo LafayetteVirtually undetectable: Invisalign allows you to straighten your teeth without metal wires and brackets. Hardly anyone will know you’re correcting your smile!
  • Convenience: Braces can get in the way, but with Invisalign, you can remove the aligners when necessary. Aligners can be taken out to eat, brush, and floss, which means you can also maintain your normal diet. No eating adjustments need to be made while using Invisalign.
  • Easy Oral Hygiene: Aligners can be removed to brush and floss so you won’t have to worry about floss threaders or other oral hygiene devices as you do with braces.

Does Invisalign Cause Any Pain Or Discomfort?

Some minor pressure or discomfort may be felt for a day or two when new aligners are worn. Each patient will have a different experience. The minor pressure is a sign that your teeth are moving sequentially into their new desired position.

How Often Do I Wear My Aligners?

You should wear your aligners for 22 hours per day, only removing them to eat, brush, and floss. These aligners will be changed every 1- 2 weeks.

Do I Have Any Food Restrictions?

No, with Invisalign you do not have any food restrictions, you may maintain your normal diet. Your aligners should be removed at all mealtimes.

Can I Chew Gum?

Gum cannot be chewed with the aligners in place as it can damage them. You should remove the aligners if you want to chew gum.

Can I Smoke?

We discourage smoking because it can discolor and warp your aligners. If you smoke, you should remove your aligners while doing so.

Should I Clean My Aligners? If So, How?

Yes, you should clean your aligners every time you take them out, mainly at mealtimes and to brush your teeth. You can brush your aligners just like you brush your teeth. Occasionally, you should also soak your aligners in a glass of water with an aligner cleaning tablet for an extra clean.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost of Invisalign varies from patient to patient and their specific treatment. During your first consultation at Dr. Doré Orthodontics, we’ll go over the cost and financial options, while answering any questions you may have. Or, for further questions about the cost, feel free to call our office.

What Will Happen Once The Treatment Is Completed?

Once the treatment is completed, you will have to wear a retainer to hold your teeth in their final position. For more information or further questions, please contact our Lafayette office today.
